After accompanying hundreds of parents through this process, I can tell you one thing with certainty: Most people in this industry genuinely care and are deeply dedicated to what they do. But wherever there's enormous emotion, big money and the dream of a family – there are also those who exploit it. In recent years we've seen too many cases of parents losing money, precious time, and sometimes embryos – because of untrustworthy players.
So how do you spot them? Here are the red flags I would check today, after everything I've seen:
Red flag #1: inflated promises. "Guaranteed match within a month", "100% success rates", "fixed price, no surprises". Surrogacy is biology, bureaucracy and human beings – anyone promising absolute certainty is lying. A serious agency will always talk to you about the less pleasant scenarios too.
Red flag #2: pressure to pay fast. "We have the perfect surrogate but she'll be snatched away if you don't wire a deposit by tomorrow." Artificial urgency is a classic scammer's sales tool. Decisions involving tens of thousands of dollars are not made under 24-hour pressure.
Red flag #3: financial opacity. No itemized cost breakdown, no separation between agency fees and escrow funds, no detailed written agreement. You asked for details and got evasive answers? Walk away.
Red flag #4: nothing can be verified. No physical address, no attorneys you can speak with, no real parents willing to give a reference (and no – anonymous reviews on the agency's own website don't count). Ask to speak with three couples who completed a journey in the past two years. A real agency will be happy to arrange it; scammers will vanish.
Red flag #5: everything happens over WhatsApp. Contracts, payments and medical decisions handled only in chat messages, with no official documents and no attorney representing you – that's a recipe for disaster.
My tip: before signing with anyone – Google their name, search for them in parent groups, and ask out loud. Our community is small and talkative, and anyone who caused problems has a reputation that precedes them. Half an hour of Googling can save you a year of heartbreak.
